Volunteer with Habitat

Habitat for Humanity of Greater Lowell offers many opportunities for volunteers of all ages. While building and working at the ReStore are important parts of the work that HFHGL does, a majority of the organization’s work happens behind the scenes away from the raising of beams and hammering of nails. Fundraising, event planning, land acquisition, marketing and public relations, grant writing, etc. are all integral parts of HFHGL’s mission of strengthening families through home ownership.

Whether you’re already a HFHGL volunteer or a new volunteer, we’d like you to sign up on the VolunteerUP system. This system will enable you to create an account, view the calendar of activities, and sign yourself up to volunteer for any of the activities listed.

Register by clicking the VolunteerUP button on the right side of this page. Click on any activity and the system will take you to the registration and login page. As you complete your profile, you will note that some fields are mandatory and others are option. The system will not allow you to register if you do not complete the mandatory fields.

If you belong to any of the “Teams” listed (ie, you’re a NetScout employee or with Hanscom AFB), please make sure to check the appropriate boxes. Certain activities are restricted to members of special teams and you will not be able to sign up for any team activity unless you’ve checked the box in your profile.

Once your profile is complete, you can sign up to volunteer at an activity such as a Build Day or at the ReStore. Just click on “return to Calendar” and click on the appropriated activity and date. Click “Update” to confirm your registration when you’re done.

Volunteers are encouraged to check the system periodically as new activities are being added all the time. If a schedule change is made to an activity you’ve volunteered for, the system will send out an email to let you know of that change.

Under the HFHGL logo at the top of the VolunteerUP page, you will find maps to the build sites and liability waiver forms. Please download and complete the waiver and bring it with you the first day you volunteer at a build site. Parents must complete and sign the special form for minder. (Students must be 16 or older to be on the build site during construction.)

*Note: Volunteers may be subject to CORI checks. CORI checks to be performed on those who volunteer on a regular basis. You will be notified when a CORI is required.

Habitat Committees

Joining a committee is a great way to volunteer your time and become an integral decision-maker for our organization. We are currently seeking committed volunteers who can offer a special interest, talent, or expertise to any of our committees listed below. Interested individuals must be willing to commit to a month or bi-monthly meeting schedule (depending on committee) and share in a committee’s roles and responsibilities.

Project Development Committee

Seek out available, buildable land; assess existing homes for potential rehabilitation; cooperate with local and state governments to acquire land; review mixed income development opportunities; work with Building Committee to ensure property is suitable for building, safe for potential homeowners, and appropriate for the surrounding community.

Building  Committee

Work with Property Acquisition Committee to ensure property is suitable for building, safe for potential homeowners, and appropriate for the surrounding community; create building plan and schedule for each property; adapt building plans for individual sites and families; retrieve estimates for building materials; work regularly on building site(s).

Family Selection Committee

Solicit, accept, and process applications from potential partner families; ensure potential partner families meet criteria; interview potential partner families. Determine families eligible for home ownership. Establish eligible partner family master list.

Family Support Committee

Mentor and advocate for HFHGL partner families; ensure that families know about “sweat equity” and are on track with completing their volunteer hours; aid in transition to homeownership; provide homeownership resources, including money management, home maintenance courses, etc. Work with families after home ownership on other support matters.

Resource Development Committee

Identify or create potential fundraising opportunities; approach potential donors (individuals, corporations, churches, etc.) for monetary, in-kind, or volunteer support; plan, coordinate, and implement special fundraising events; execute annual direct mailing campaign; write grants; help coordinate HFHGL public relations and marketing, including press releases, flyers, brochures, newsletters, website development, local television requests, etc.

Interfaith Committee

Identify and recruit potential covenant churches; coordinate Faith Build Week; develop general relations within the faith-based community.

Youth United Committee

Identify opportunities for youth to become involved with Habitat for Humanity. Act as an awareness resource to different youth groups serving as speaker and information resource.
